PRESENTATIONS: Business and Technical Writing

Learn the elements of good business writing and how to write documents people want to read.

Presentations are built on our POWER approach, a step-by-step writing process to help business and technical people write to get results. It’s straightforward, effective, and almost anyone can learn to use it.

How long are presentations? Generally, presentations are 1 hour long, which includes a 50-minute presentation and a 10-minute Q&A.

Can presentations be customized? Yes, they can be customized for your group’s needs.

Where are presentations available? Presentations are available in the Lower Mainland, or in other areas by arrangement.

WORKSHOPS

Like our presentations, workshops are built around the POWER approach, our step-by-step writing process that teaches business and technical people to write clear, focused reports, proposals, and memos. First, they learn the key elements of good business writing. Then they learn how to write documents that people want to read.

The difference between the workshop and the presentations is that workshop participants get hands-on experience using the POWER approach, working through examples and discussing them. Workshops are interactive, and participants receive worksheets and answer keys, plus notes they can refer to later.

How long are workshops? They are 3 to 4 hours long.

Where are workshops available? In BC’s Lower Mainland, or other areas by arrangement.

COACHING

Personal coaching is a supportive, one-to-one process that guides workshop participants who wish to apply their new skills to a real project.

How it works

Timing: Coaching is an add-on, after a presentation workshop. Participants sign up for coaching and then access it when they have a writing project to complete. This might be immediately after the workshop, or a few weeks later.

Process: Coaching time is divided between phone or online discussions and written feedback. We start by discussing how the participant will approach the writing task. Then, when the participant has their draft ready, they send it to Words at Work for review. We then we schedule a time to discuss the feedback and answer the participant’s questions. After the discussion, participants revise their draft and can return it to Words at Work for a second review.
